The holiday season can be stressful for both pets and their owners

Research from Ceva Animal Health has revealed that holidays can be hugely stressful for both pets and their owners with over 80 per cent of pet owners feeling guilty about leaving their pet while they are away.

Ceva said that 85 per cent of those questioned worried about their pet while they were on holiday, with over 60 per cent staying at home because they have been so concerned and 63 per cent choosing shorter holidays as they have not wanted to leave their pet for long periods.

And it appears that it is not only owners that worry, as 46 per cent of those questioned believe that their pet’s behaviour changed while they are on holiday by becoming withdrawn (58 per cent), meowing or barking (24 per cent) and in the case of dogs, becoming destructive (15 per cent).

Moreover, the human-animal bond is so strong in some cases that 65 per cent of pet owners take their dog with them on holiday, with over 80 per cent paying extra for accommodation for the privilege. And for pets staying at home, over half are looked after by family and friends while their owners are away, with 18 per cent going to a kennel and cattery.

Abbie King, product manager for ADAPTIL and FELIWAY at Ceva Animal Health, said: “The unconditional love and companionship of our pets can make the holiday season stressful for all concerned.

“ADAPTIL and FELIWAY can help dogs and cats feel calm and relaxed in stressful situations, ensuring holidays are as happy and stress-free as possible.”
