The Controlling ANTiparasitic resistance in Equines Responsibly (CANTER) initiative, launched to tackle the growing problem of anthelmintic resistance, has transitioned to a new governance model, working with the Responsible Use ofMedicines Alliance – Companion Animal and Equine (RUMA CA&E) to ensure its continued impact and sustainability.
This milestone was marked at this week’s National Equine Forum, two years after the initiative’s launch at the same event in 2023.
Originally established by the Veterinary Medicines Directorate (VMD), CANTER has made significant strides in coordinating efforts to safeguard the efficacy of worming treatments for the future.
With the VMD’s governance role now concluded, CANTER is entering a new phase under the stewardship of RUMA CA&E, which has stepped in to provide governance, financial management, and administrative support.
“With the steadfast support of RUMA CA&E, we are confident that this progress will continue. Together, we remain dedicated to advancing responsible practices that address the critical challenge of anthelmintic resistance in equines.”
The RUMA CA&E Alliance was established in 2020 to define the principles of responsible use of medicines in the companion animal and equine sectors with a view to contributing positively to the One Health agenda. This collaboration covers the responsible use of medicines in dogs, cats, rabbits, small mammals, exotic animals kept as pets, and equids. The aim is for the UK to lead the way in these sectors through evidence-based and measurable activities that will promote and enhance stewardship.
RUMA CA&E chair, Gwyn Jones, added: “We are delighted to be working with and supporting CANTER, an organisation whose values closely align with RUMA CA&E’s mission.
“CANTER has already achieved so much, and we look forward to collaborating in our mutual efforts to support the profession in the responsible use of veterinary medicines across the CA&E sectors.”
