The Sustainable Control of Parasites in Sheep (SCOPS) group is excited to announce the launch of season three of the SCOPS podcast, with episode one now available on all major platforms.

This first episode dives into Haemonchus contortus, also known as Barber’s Pole Worm. Haemonchus is a blood-feeding parasite, and while it currently affects only a minority of farms, its numbers are increasing which is a growing concern for the UK sheep sector. The episode aims to raise awareness and provide practical, sound advice for farmers and advisors.

Listeners will hear directly from two farmers who have experienced haemonchosis (the clinical disease caused by haemonchus) in their flocks. They share how they identified the issue, the impact it had, and the steps they’ve taken to manage it effectively.

Also joining the conversation is Kaz Strycharczyk, a vet from Black Sheep Farm Health, Northumberland, who has been supporting clients through haemonchus outbreaks.

Kaz said: “I was really keen to be involved in this episode to help disseminate key information about this parasite, we don’t want people to panic. It’s about awareness, not alarm.”

Nerys Wright, technical adviser for SCOPS, added: “We’re really pleased to be launching season 3 with topics that are timely and relevant to the industry. Haemonchus is a great example of something that is increasingly on people’s radar. This season is all about sharing real experiences and practical advice.”

SCOPS said irt would like to thank Boehringer Ingelheim, Elanco, Norbrook, and Zoetis for their support in making this season of the podcast possible.

The podcast is available on all major platforms, including Spotify, Apple, Podbean or the SCOPS website.
