Zoetis calls for help to reduce the risk of Equine Herpes Virus

Zoetis UK is asking horse owners to help with a survey to identify the most effective ways to minimise the risks of Equine Herpes Virus (EHV) – a common, debilitating and potentially fatal infectious equine respiratory disease and a cause of abortion in pregnant mares.

Equine Herpes Virus (EHV) is a highly contagious airborne virus that exists worldwide and every horse or pony is susceptible. It can lead to respiratory problems and poor performance and at worst it may result in severe and potentially fatal disease.

EHV can spread quickly from horse to horse through the air over short distances, via direct contact or shared equipment and can survive in the environment for up to three weeks. The virus can be reactivated during times of stress, potentially causing new outbreaks which could affect the health of the whole yard.2

“By participating in this important survey, you can help us to find out more about current knowledge and management practices around EHV in the UK,” said Penny McCann, equine product manager at Zoetis.

“Ultimately you will be helping us to reduce the potentially fatal risks to your horses.”

The survey is quick and easy to complete, and participants have the chance of winning one of 10 equine first aid kits. To take part in the survey, click here.
