A new case of highly pathogenic avian influenza (H5N1 HPAI) has been confirmed in a commercial free-range laying flock with more than 10,000 birds at a premises near Penrith, Westmorland and Furness, Cumbria.
Following confirmation of the outbreak, Defra declared a 3km Protection Zone and a 10km Surveillance Zone around the affected premises at 5.05pm on October 18.
These disease control zones place restrictions on the movement of poultry, other captive birds, and related materials to help prevent the spread of infection.
