    Deosect is back in stock

    Zoetis has announced that Deosect, its POM-VPS insecticide is back in stock.

    Deosect is a prescription product to control flies, lice and midges for up to four weeks, providing long-term relief for horses. The product gives vets and SQPs the opportunity to advise on a product that needs to be prescribed by them.

    It contains Cypermethrin, which has the longest activity of horse insecticide ingredients and controls flies for up to four weeks.

    “Helping your customers understand the difference between a fly repellent and an insecticide means they can make an informed choice,” said Wendy Talbot, national equine veterinary manager at Zoetis.

    “A repellent aims to make the horse less attractive to the fly while an insecticide has a medicinal function and aims to kill the fly as soon as possible after contact with no biting needed. Strategic, early use of an insecticide will help horse owners to reduce fly problems and improve comfort for their horses.”

    Ms Talbot has produced some practical tips to assist SQPs in engaging in dialogue about fly prevention with clients:

    • Clear droppings away from the stable and pasture every day to reduce breeding grounds for flies;
    • Keep the muck heap and full wheelbarrows away from where your horse is stabled and grazes;
    • Try to avoid stabling or grazing near stagnant water;
    • Use a fly rug and face mask if your horse is badly affected;
    • Stable your horse in the mornings and evenings when the flies are at their worst; and
    • Use a fly repellent or insecticide.
