Mole Valley Farmers said its Calf Expo, taking place at Sedgemoor Livestock Market on Friday, March 20, will feature a host of industry experts on the cutting edge of calf care.

The focus of the event will be maximising calves from birth to 16 weeks and includes seminars on topics ranging from unlocking a herd’s genetic potential to improving rumen development.

The expo also offers farmers the chance to speak to representatives from key suppliers showcasing some of the latest dairy and beef rearing research and innovation.

Adam May, Mole Valley Farmers’ head of commercial management, said: “This is a great opportunity for our farmers to speak to some of the men and women at the forefront of calf production.

“There have been many recent innovations in the sector and they will be showcasing some of the best research and development out there, from protein digestion to new teat bars designed to slow milk intake.”

Mr May continued: “We understand every farm is different and the expo will give farmers the chance to talk to the experts about what they think will get them the best outcomes for their own unique systems.

“We’re committed to adding real value for our farmers and we feel a responsibility to make sure they have the best information available to help them improve their bottom line.”

There will be trade stands for farmers looking to improve their environmental credentials or boost liveweight gain with the best nutrition, as well as information on everything from mineral supplementation to building a new calf shed.

The expo centres on the birth to after weaning period, before a calf hits four months old, when good nutrition, disease prevention, supplementation and welfare are most crucial.

Seminar speakers include Nukamel’s international product manager Fieke Krol on the importance of the Milk Fat Globule Membrane and Volac’s research and development manager Dr Jessica Cooke on reaching key goals and targets.

Evans Vanodine’s executive and speaker Josh Burrows will outline the importance of biosecurity and hygiene in calf sheds, Nettex manager Nia Williams will discuss colostrum management and Anna McIntyre from Dairy Spares will be talking about improving weight gain and tackling scours and cross suckling.

And Mole Valley Farmers’ head of nutrition, Dr Chris Bartram, will showcase developments in calf compound feeds and how the correct product selection can have a massive impact on overall profitability.

Sponsored by Evans Vanodine, Nettex, Nukamel, Dairy Spares, Feed for Growth and Feed Solutions, the day also includes a host of exclusive show only deals on everything from calf milk replacer to dry calf feed.

The Expo runs from 9am until 4pm and includes a free bacon roll on arrival at the Sedgemoor Livestock Market in North Petherton, Somerset, TA6 6DF.
